Chris's grandfather went hunting to get food for his family even though he didn’t like to kill deer. After he shot a deer he would sob to himself, because he didn’t like to kill but knew it was necessary for his family to live.

The life lesson in chapter twelve is to let people who are close to you know if you’re going away somewhere before you leave. Chris didn’t let his parents know where he was going, and they didn’t know were he was and got worried.It also showed that you should always be prepared, and Chris’s lack of preparation he almost ends up dying in the Mohave Desert.
